Why people use capital letters when writing an email?

A guy (crush) friend of mine is celebrating his b-day today, so I sent him a note congratulating him. He just replied THANKS JANET! Why he used capital letters, I've heard is yelling?

Can someone clear it up for me please?

He is really pleased you wished him a happy b'day. Or he left the caps lock on.
Reply:These days using all capital letters in an e-mail or IM is usually considered shouting -- however in such a brief message as the one your quote it is really just emphasis.

Interestingly, several senior-aged friends of mine who have only recently begun using e-mail and messaging always used all capitals and it was difficult to wean them off it. I suspect they may be unconsciously equating modern, electronic communication with telegrams -- which were always in all caps.

Of course, the other side of this coin is the people who never use capital letters in e-mail or messages. Just as annoying, really.
Reply:You're right it's shouting.
